In the contemporary Chinese art circle, Mr. He Jiangxiong's name is always closely associated with the imagery of 'shrimp.' The shrimps in his paintings are no longer merely depictions of aquatic creatures; they transform into a 'Chinese dragon' embodying Eastern philosophical thought and national character. Rendered in gold ink on dark paper, his works, through the blending of tradition and innovation, document an artist's steadfast dedication and exploration spanning over forty years. He Jiangxiong, styled Yizheng, with the sobriquets Yehe Laosou and Panda, was born in 1971 in the scholarly family of Jingxing, Hebei. His grandfather, Mr. He Jingwu, was a well-known local painter. Immersed in the world of brush and ink from an early age, He Jiangxiong developed an inseparable bond with calligraphy and painting. He held a brush at the age of four, began learning painting at seven, and was able to create independently by the age of twelve. The cultural heritage passed down through his family was like a seed quietly taking root in his heart, laying the groundwork for his future artistic path. As a third-generation direct disciple of Qi Baishi, he deeply absorbed the essence of the Qi school of art. Later, under the personal guidance of Master Li Keran, he gained profound inspiration in the mastery of ink-aggregated landscapes. Building on the robust and harmonious brushwork of the Qi school, he has forged an artistic path uniquely his own.

He Jiangxiong’s artistic journey has always revolved around the two major themes of “inheritance” and “innovation.” The Qi School of painting shrimps uses extremely simplified brushwork to capture the vitality of the shrimp, while He Jiangxiong, on the basis of inheriting the essence of the Qi School, endows the shrimp with richer cultural connotations and forms of expression. He has devoted more than twenty years to studying Qi Baishi’s techniques for painting shrimps, examining every segment of the shrimp’s body and every antenna in meticulous detail. Beyond traditional ink painting, he boldly experiments with diverse mediums such as gold ink, red rice paper, and black paper, allowing the image of the shrimp to transcend a single ink context and radiate new vitality. The “Chinese Dragon” exhibited this time is a representative work of his innovative style. On the profoundly dark black paper, he uses gold as ink, with two large shrimps swimming toward each other. The golden bodies of the shrimps shine brilliantly against the dark background, their segments arranged in an orderly but varied manner, and their antennae stretch like silk, as if ripples could spread across the paper. A touch of vermilion on the shrimp heads serves as a final flourish, breaking the monotony of color while imbuing the shrimps with the imagery of a “dragon’s spirit.” The two shrimps echo each other head to tail, like twin dragons playfully interacting or dragons hidden in the abyss, integrating the shrimp’s liveliness with the majesty of the dragon. This is precisely a clever manifestation of his “Double-Scene Moonlight Painting” technique: in daylight, the golden shrimps are distinct, with crisp lines; under moonlight, the gold ink emits a subtle glow, and the shrimp’s outlines intertwine with the light and shadow, enhancing a sense of mysterious and distant ambiance.

He Jiangxiong's art has never been a pursuit of solitary admiration; rather, it is an expression imbued with warmth and sentiment. He concurrently serves as the Director of the Cultural Department of the Hebei Province Charity and Mutual Aid Association and as Vice President of the People's Academy of Calligraphy and Painting, consistently practicing the social responsibility of an artist—conveying love through calligraphy and painting, and warming hearts with ink and brush. His works have participated in national art exhibitions multiple times and have won awards; "Following the World" is part of the collection of the National Museum of China, and his pieces frequently achieve outstanding results in both domestic and international auction markets, becoming a focal point of attention in the collecting community. Despite his great fame, he remains true to his original intention, practicing calligraphy daily without cease for over forty years, and his passion for ink and brush has never waned. He often says that painting shrimp is like painting himself; the transparency, agility, and uniqueness of the shrimp reflect his own approach to life. The dragons hidden within his paintings pay tribute to the spirit of the Chinese nation, as he wishes to use his brush to depict the soul of the Eastern dragon and convey the Chinese spirit.

Hailing from a scholarly family in Jingxing, He Jiangxiong carries forward his family's literary heritage, the essence of the Qi school, and the guidance of Master Li Keran, forging a path uniquely his own in the contemporary art world. His shrimps, emerging from the ink traditions of the Qi school, are transformed under his brush into 'Chinese dragons' that embody culture and spirit. The golden ink not only captures the posture of the shrimp but also reflects an artist's dedication to traditional culture, pursuit of innovation, and tribute to the national spirit. In this era of cultural diversity and collision, He Jiangxiong navigates the ocean of art with brush and ink as his vessel and his original intent as the helm. His artworks are not merely a feast for the eyes but a continuation of cultural heritage—a poetic expression of Eastern philosophy and national character. Just like the golden shrimps under his brush, they swim through the ages, retaining the charm of the East, and shine brightly on the contemporary stage, showcasing the brilliance of Chinese painting and calligraphy.
