We are privileged to present a fine piece from our collection: the aged-patinated white Hetian jade mountain carving The Elegant Gathering in the West Garden of the Qing Dynasty. Carved entirely from a single unbroken jade boulder following the stone’s natural contour, the ornament features deep-set antique dark-brown natural jade infiltration and rich, time-honored patina. Inspired by the classical literary anecdote of Song-dynasty literati gatherings, it is adorned with rolling mountain ridges, cliffside pavilions, gnarled ancient pines and wandering refined scholars. Boasting scarce raw-material value, antique craft value, profound cultural and historical significance as well as steady long-term appreciation potential, it ranks as an exceptional treasure handed down from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Adhering to the classical philosophy of carving in accordance with natural form and pursuing harmony between humanity and nature, Qing jade craftsmen sculpted landscapes along the stone’s undulating original outline instead of altering the boulder’s shape arbitrarily, preserving the jade’s innate beauty and achieving seamless unity between natural stone and manual craftsmanship.

Carved from one solid natural white Hetian jade block without any joint or supplementary inlay, the ornament takes on a natural mountainous shape inherent to the rough stone. The jade boasts fine, glossy and compact oily texture. After centuries of natural aging, irregular dark brown antique infiltration has permeated the jade from outside inward, accumulating densely in gullies, rock crevices and pine roots while the exposed jade body remains translucent and creamy white.
