The cultural heritage of China has endured for thousands of years, and Daoist-Buddhist figure painting began in the Wei and Jin dynasties. It was refined through brushwork and ink in the Tang and Song dynasties, innovated in expressive style during the Yuan and Ming dynasties, and in modern times, a number of master calligraphers and painters have continued to innovate, giving rise to a style that blends the ancient and the contemporary. Mr. Fan Zeng is a benchmark figure in the field of modern and contemporary figure painting, inheriting the past while opening new paths. This color painting 'Eight Immortals' represents a classic work of his folk Daoist-Buddhist-themed art, incorporating Daoist reclusive philosophy, folk legends of the Eight Immortals, the Southern School expressive brushwork, and traditional color aesthetics on a single sheet. 全作八仙布局错落合度，恪守传统人物画疏密章法。左侧铁拐李端坐石上，一改邋遢旧貌，黄袍束红带，神态旷达；旁侧汉钟离身着花青蓝衣，俯身静听，衣纹以书法线条写就，石边闲章朱色点缀，平衡画面。中景为视觉核心，张果老倒骑墨驴于古木之下，借典故寄寓随缘悟道的道家哲思；身前蓝采和粉衫小巧，持渔鼓携葫芦，鲜亮设色盘活画面气韵。右侧依次绘韩湘子、何仙姑、吕洞宾、曹国舅，独一女仙何仙姑裙衫艳雅，为全卷设色亮点；吕洞宾墨袍长髯、躬身谦和，契合剑仙入世济世的人设；曹国舅素衣官靴，映衬舍弃王侯富贵、归隐修道的经历。众仙坐立各异、神情有别，左繁右简、虚实相生，依托身形、服饰、专属法器，把八仙各自身世典故与民俗底蕴凝于笔墨。

The entire composition of the Eight Immortals is arranged in a staggered and harmonious manner, faithfully adhering to the traditional rules of spacing and density in figure painting. On the left, Iron Crutch Li sits upright on a rock, shedding his formerly disheveled appearance; he wears a yellow robe tied with a red sash, exuding an open and serene demeanor. Beside him, Han Zhongli, dressed in a blue and green patterned garment, leans forward to listen attentively, with the folds of his clothing rendered in calligraphic lines, while small red seals beside the stone add decorative touches and balance the composition. The middle ground serves as the visual focal point: Zhang Guolao rides his black donkey backward under an ancient tree, invoking Daoist philosophical reflection on following fate and attaining enlightenment; in front of him, Lan Caihe wears a delicate pink robe and carries a fisherman's drum and a gourd, and the vivid coloring brings vitality to the scene. On the right are depicted Han Xiangzi, He Xiangu, Lü Dongbin, and Cao Guojiu in sequence. The sole female immortal, He Xiangu, stands out in her elegant and colorful garments, providing a bright focal point for the scroll; Lü Dongbin, with his ink-colored robe and long beard, bows humbly, fitting his characterization as a sword-wielding immortal aiding the world; Cao Guojiu, in a plain robe with official boots, reflects his renunciation of princely wealth and status to pursue a hermitic, spiritual path. The immortals are portrayed in various postures and expressions, with intricate compositions on the left and simplified forms on the right, creating a dynamic interplay of space. Through their body postures, clothing, and distinctive magical attributes, the painting consolidates the individual backstories of the Eight Immortals along with traditional cultural connotations into ink and color.

画面右上竖书范曾标志性铁线行书题跋，题记千禧庚辰年创作缘由，纪事抒怀，书风与人物笔墨气韵统一，尽显书画同源之妙。题下钤“十翼”白文、“江东范曾”朱文二方主印，铁拐李侧另置椭圆闲章，朱印辅构图、添金石意趣，完备诗书画印一体的国画形制。配套鉴定册页录藏品明细、作者合影并钤鉴藏印，图文互证，藏品传承脉络清晰，有效拔高文史与收藏价值。

In the upper right corner of the painting, there is a vertical inscription in Fan Zeng’s characteristic iron-wire cursive script, recording the reason for its creation in the year of Gengchen of the millennium, as well as documenting events and expressing sentiments. The calligraphic style harmonizes with the brushwork and aura of the figures, fully demonstrating the profound connection between painting and calligraphy. Beneath the inscription are two seals: the white-character seal “Shiyi” and the vermilion seal “Jiangdong Fan Zeng.” To the side of the Iron-Crutch Li figure, there is an additional oval leisure seal, with the red seals complementing the composition and enhancing the aesthetic of stone and metal. This completes the integration of poetry, calligraphy, painting, and seal within the traditional Chinese painting format. The accompanying authentication album documents the collection details, includes photographs of the artist, and affixes collector’s seals. The images and texts corroborate each other, clearly tracing the provenance of the collection, thereby effectively enhancing its historical and cultural significance as well as its collectible value.
