The entire hanging scroll is arranged sparsely and ethereally. Not a single blade of grass, lotus, or half-drop of water is depicted, yet the sheet is filled with the misty waters of rivers and lakes. This is the supreme subtlety of "leaving blank to create a scene" in Chinese painting. More than ten ink shrimps are arranged in a staggered manner, each oriented differently—some swimming forward, some turning sideways, some hidden in the background, and some moving leisurely. The foreground and background are clearly layered, without a sense of crowding or piling up. Between the sparse and dense areas lies a natural, wild charm. Nearby, several shrimps are painted in solid, rich ink with distinct gradations, their heads heavy and full, bodies segmented and clearly discernible, forming the visual center of the composition; in the distance, the shrimp are lightly brushed with pale ink, faint and hazy, as if submerged in deep water. The interplay of solid and void extends depth with just a few ink strokes. 白石画虾的绝妙，首在墨法运用的出神入化。画虾身独擅 “破墨” 之法，一笔落纸，浓墨点虾头，墨色自然晕开，虾脑半透，鲜活通透，完美还原活虾头部胶质的温润质感；虾身分段淡墨晕染，每一节虾腹由浅至深自然过渡，墨色浓淡相融不见生硬边界，一笔成型便带出虾身柔软通透的肉身，寥寥数笔，坚硬外壳下的鲜活软嫩跃然纸上。虾尾以三两笔浓墨侧锋扫出，分叉舒展，力道轻盈，游动时的摆动感顷刻显现；虾钳以劲挺细墨勾勒，长短线条刚劲利落，开合有度，暗藏虾的灵动锐气，却不张扬凶悍；最称绝的是虾须，以极细狼毫蘸淡墨，中锋运笔拉出绵长柔韧长线，数百根虾须纵横交错，线条看似纷乱，实则条理分明，长线婉转飘逸，随风水轻轻颤动，柔而不弱、繁而不乱，纤细线条里藏着千钧笔力，将虾在水中浮游、触须随波轻摆的细腻动态描摹得入木三分，静纸之上生出流动气韵。

The brilliance of Bái Shí’s shrimp paintings lies primarily in the masterful application of ink techniques. For the body of the shrimp, he uniquely employs the 'broken ink' method: with a single stroke on paper, a dollop of dense ink marks the shrimp's head, naturally diffusing to render the shrimp's brain semi-transparent, vivid and clear, perfectly capturing the soft, gelatinous texture of a living shrimp's head. The body is shaded in segments with light ink washes, with each abdominal section transitioning naturally from light to dark, blending the shades seamlessly without harsh boundaries. A single stroke forms the shrimp’s tender, translucent body, with just a few strokes bringing the life beneath the hard shell vividly to paper. The tail is rendered with two or three side-stroke sweeps of dense ink, forked and spreading, conveying a light and lifted sense of movement. The claws are outlined with firm, fine ink lines, the lengths and angles precise and controlled, opening and closing with measured energy, subtly hinting at the shrimp's agility and alertness without appearing aggressive. Most remarkable are the shrimp’s whiskers. Using extremely fine wolf-hair brushes dipped in light ink, he draws long, supple lines with center strokes. Hundreds of whiskers weave in an apparently chaotic but actually orderly pattern. The long lines are graceful and flowing, lightly vibrating as if moved by water or wind. They are soft yet strong, intricate yet uncluttered, containing immense brush power.
