In the early years of the Republic of China, China’s financial market fell into complete chaos. Privately minted coins from various provinces left over from the late Qing Dynasty varied greatly in design and silver fineness. Foreign currencies such as Mexican Dollars and British Trade Dollars circulated rampantly across the country, severely disrupting domestic trade and economic order. To put an end to the monetary disorder and unify the national currency system, the Beiyang Government officially promulgated the National Currency Regulations in 1914, implemented a silver standard system, and launched one of the most significant monetary reforms in modern Chinese history.
