In the hall of traditional Chinese metal and stone art, Tianhuang stone seals have always been regarded as treasures in the seal world due to their moist and solid texture and the scarcity described by the saying "one tael of Tianhuang is worth three taels of gold". Seals personally carved by famous artists, which combine the beauty of materials with cultural connotations, carry an artistic dialogue across a century. This set of Tianhuang stone seals, inscribed by Huang Shanshou and Wu Changshuo, is a microcosm of the late Qing Dynasty's metal, stone, calligraphy and painting art. Between the inches of the seals, it embodies the calligraphic styles of two masters of the Shanghai School and also shows the unique gentle charm of Tianhuang stone.

As the finest among Shoushan stones, Tianhuang stone is produced in the paddy fields of Shoushan Township, Fujian. It has fine texture like solidified fat, warm and translucent color, and natural radish vein patterns like brocade woven by time, endowing the stone with unique moist luster. The stones of this set of seals are all high-quality Tianhuang frozen stones, with transparent and moist texture, warm yellow gradient color, and natural textures faintly visible in the texture echoing the carving lines. After a hundred years, they still retain their restrained luster, showing the graceful bearing of the "king of stones".

The Huang Shanshou-style seal is decorated with landscape shallow relief carvings, depicting the scene of "scholars traveling in spring". Between the layered green mountains carved along the stone's shape, the pines stand tall, the bridges and flowing streams complement each other, and two scholars stand by the stream, their flowing clothes fully embodying the elegance of literati. The running script inscription "Carved by Huang Shanshou, the Old Man of Xuchi, in the third month of the Renzi year" is engraved on the side of the seal. The strokes are free and vigorous, inheriting his calligraphy foundation that integrates Tang clerical script and Northern Wei Dynasty calligraphy. The lines have both the solemnity of regular script and the agility of cursive script. The seal face's seal script characters are sparsely arranged, with steady knife work and round and smooth lines, fully showing the elegance of Shanghai School seal carving, just like Huang Shanshou's green landscape paintings, showing the charm of brush and ink in the details.

The Wu Changshuo-style seal fully shows the metal and stone style of a generation of masters. The stone is carved according to its natural shape, with shallow relief carvings of pine branches and rocks. The knife work is concise and vigorous, and a few strokes outline the proud character of the pine, showing the freehand style. The seal script characters on the seal face draw inspiration from the Drum Stone Inscriptions, with a grand and integrated layout, and vigorous and ancient lines. Wu Changshuo's signature blunt knife technique makes the lines on the seal face show thickness in slowness and simplicity in imperfection, integrating the simplicity of Han seals with the vigor of the Drum Stone Inscriptions. This creation that uses the knife as a brush breaks the regular paradigm of traditional seal carving, creating a magnificent metal and stone atmosphere in the inches of the seal, just like his artistic pursuit of integrating poetry, calligraphy, painting and seal carving into one furnace, with every stroke hiding the strength of ancient seal script calligraphy and the tension of metal and stone art.

The value of this set of seals has long surpassed the material value of Tianhuang stone itself, and lies more in the dialogue and collision of the seal carving styles of the two masters. Huang Shanshou's seal is like misty rain in the south of the Yangtze River, elegant and refined with the gentle interest of literati; Wu Changshuo's seal is like clanging metal and stone, vigorous and ancient with the heroic spirit of a master. Placed together, the two are soft and hard, delicate and grand, just like the two sides of late Qing Dynasty metal and stone art, which not only have the implicit introversion of traditional literati art, but also surging with the atmosphere of innovation and change of the times. After a hundred years of circulation, this set of seals still retains the original brocade base and wooden box packaging. Every detail carries the warmth of collection and inheritance, becoming a cultural link connecting the past and the present.

From the moist and solid texture of Tianhuang stone, to the landscape artistic conception of shallow relief carving, and then to the brush and ink style in the seal carving lines, this set of seals is a triple resonance of material, craft and humanity. It is not only a concrete presentation of the artistic styles of two Shanghai School masters, but also a precious relic of late Qing Dynasty metal, stone, calligraphy and painting art. Every seal stone and every carving stroke tells the aesthetic pursuit and artistic style of literati and scholars of that era, allowing us to touch the temperature of metal and stone across a hundred years in the inches of the seals.
