This specimen is the Flying Dragon commemorative silver coin featuring Yuan Shikai in plumed military uniform, issued for the Hongxian Era of the Chinese Empire. Struck in 1916 by the Tientsin General Mint, its die was masterfully engraved under the direction of Italian virtuoso engraver Luigi Giorgi (L.GIORGI). Ranked among the Top Ten Prestigious Rarities of China’s modern machine-struck coinage, it stands as a monumental treasure in numismatic collecting circles. Not intended for general circulation, it was struck exclusively as a commemorative award for Yuan Shikai’s Hongxian coronation ceremony. The Hongxian monarchy collapsed after merely 83 days, and most of the minted coins were subsequently confiscated and melted down. Authentic surviving examples retaining their original inherited patina are exceedingly rare, and every auction appearance draws intense attention from senior collectors worldwide.

The coin die was hand-carved by Luigi Giorgi, the chief foreign engraver of the Tientsin General Mint. It perfectly integrates Western realistic relief sculpture for portraiture with the traditional Eastern flying dragon totem. The steel die features exquisitely minute carving details. Under high-pressure striking, the portrait appears full and three-dimensional, while the flying dragon carries a majestic aura with smooth, dynamic lines. This coin represents the pinnacle of engraving craftsmanship for modern Chinese portrait machine-struck coins and boasts extremely high artistic and aesthetic value.

This item is the One Yuan silver coin with Yuan Shikai’s portrait, Gansu variety, minted in the 3rd year of the Republic of China. It was recut and struck by the Gansu Mint, serving as the official silver currency circulating mainly in the northwest region during the Republic of China era. It is a classic regional variant within the Yuan Datou series.

On the obverse lies the profile military portrait of Yuan Shikai, featuring the signature double-lidded eye socket. The portrait is full and substantial. The six Chinese characters “Republic of China, 3rd Year” are written in powerful, bold strokes, with an extra dot on the character “Min (People)”, distinguishing its calligraphic style from the standard version produced by the Tianjin General Mint. On the reverse, the central inscription reads “One Yuan”. The character “Yuan (Dollar)” has an open-bottom shell radical. It is surrounded by grain wreaths with large, plump wheat sprigs. The coin has typical wide olive-shaped edge teeth, making the features of this variety instantly recognizable.

his silver coin retains its original inherited patina. The patina is mild and natural with soft tonal transitions, showing no signs of artificial treatment such as acid washing, polishing, re-engraving or repair. Fine details including the hair strands of the portrait, epaulet features, veins of the grain wreath and inscriptions remain clearly preserved. The coin’s field is flat, free of severe dents or knocks. The edge reeding is continuous and intact, with natural wear from circulation.

Located in Northwest China, the Gansu Mint operated for a short period and produced coins in limited quantities. Coupled with silver remelting losses over a century of wars, well-preserved specimens with original patina are scarce. Unlike the abundant 3rd-year Yuan Datou minted by the Central Mint, the Gansu variety is a sought-after advanced collectible in the numismatic system of machine-struck coins. Boasting profound historical records, instant recognizability and strong market liquidity, it carries historical research value, variety-collecting value and long-term value preservation potential. It is a rare and high-quality target for thematic collections of modern silver coins.

his specimen is the 1 Yuan silver coin with Yuan Shikai’s portrait of the 3rd year of the Republic of China, the “Soviet” stamped variety. It is a prestigious rare treasure among Republican-era machine-struck coins bearing profound red historical significance. The base coin, an Early Republic of China Yuan Datou, was originally minted at the Tientsin Mint in the 3rd year of the Republic of China. Later, the “Soviet” stamp was applied by the revolutionary red regime. Serving as tangible heritage of the red financial history during the Agrarian Revolutionary War, it integrates the minting craftsmanship of Republican machine-struck coinage with the history of the Chinese red revolution. Surviving specimens are scarce. As a sought-after collectible spanning two sectors — red relic collection and machine-struck coin numismatics, it boasts revolutionary historical documentary value, numismatic craft value and scarce collectible value. It is a high-grade treasure eagerly pursued by collectors specializing in red relics and modern silver coinage.

The blank coin itself is the classic Yuan Datou of the 3rd year of the Republic of China, die-engraved and struck by the Tientsin General Mint, serving as the benchmark for circulating silver coins of the Republican era. The portrait is rendered realistically and three-dimensionally, while the grain wreath ornament adopts a symmetrical and elegant composition. Struck with ample pressure from the steel die, it embodies the mature stamping technology of machine-struck coinage in the Beiyang period. The coin features delicate lines and timeless aesthetics. Collectors of modern machine-struck coins value the rarity of this variety, while collectors of red cultural relics prize its identity as a revolutionary physical artifact, resulting in a broader audience base. Authentic specimens of this type have been brought to auction by top-tier auction houses, and every appearance draws joint bidding from both red relic collectors and numismatists, enjoying extremely high recognition within collecting circles.
