Beijing’s Palace Museum, the 600-year-old imperial palace complex, stands as the pinnacle of Chinese architectural aesthetics and a sanctuary housing millions of national treasures. When grand palatial halls and legendary cultural relics are condensed onto tiny stamp surfaces, each precious stamp bears the weight of civilisation spanning thousands of years. This complete set of 4 Special Stamps The Palace Museum, Catalogue Number 2015-21, comes fully sealed with authoritative grading certification, scoring an excellent XF95 grade with flawless condition. Through these miniature artworks, you may admire the grand architecture of the Forbidden City and the essence of its museum relics without stepping foot outside your home. Boasting multi-fold value for cultural appreciation, philatelic collection and gift-giving, it is a rare classic cultural and museum-themed collectible.
Issued officially by China Post on October 10, 2015, under the catalogue number 2015-21, the Special Stamps The Palace Museum were created to mark the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Palace Museum. It marks the first full-panorama themed special stamp set exclusively dedicated to the Palace Museum by China Post, holding extraordinary significance and an irreplaceable standing in China’s philatelic history.
The set contains four stamps with a total face value of 5.4 RMB, co-designed by leading national stamp artists Wang Huming and Fenghui, and printed by Henan Post & Telecommunication Printing House using advanced combined intaglio and offset printing technology. Breaking free from the conventional format of ordinary commemorative stamps that only depict architecture, this collection adopts an innovative layout featuring a main palatial building image paired with a supplementary vignette of museum cultural relics. Each stamp showcases an iconic core building of the Palace Museum on the left, matched with a top-tier national treasure from the museum’s collection on the right. Every palace is paired with a corresponding relic, weaving together ancient architecture and rare artefacts to fully embody the dual core identity of the Palace Museum as an “epic of architecture” and a “treasure trove of cultural relics”. This dual-image interactive layout was extremely rare among special stamp sets released in the same period, winning widespread acclaim from both philatelic circles and cultural heritage professionals upon its release.
As a top-tier cultural IP of Chinese civilisation, the Palace Museum carries unique historical heritage that cannot be replicated. Coupled with the set’s special release background, original layout design and scarce thematic positioning, the stock of fully graded, high-score sealed complete sets continues to dwindle year by year. Long regarded by veteran collectors as an essential foundational set for all Palace Museum-themed collections, it consistently gains rising market recognition.

Each of the four stamps bears a distinctive theme, featuring four landmark constructions of the Palace Museum: the Meridian Gate, the Hall of Supreme Harmony, the Corner Tower and the Gate of Heavenly Purity. They are paired with four categories of national treasures respectively: white jade dragon-and-phoenix disc, heavy bronze ritual vessel of the Shang and Zhou dynasties, handed-down ancient landscape painting, and imperial blue-and-white porcelain. The architectures and cultural relics echo each other, fully showcasing the 600-year imperial bearing and artistic heritage of the Forbidden City.
Meridian Gate · Hollow-Carved White Jade Dragon and Phoenix Disc
The main design of the first stamp depicts the Meridian Gate, widely known as the Five Phoenix Towers. Set against a bright imperial yellow background, the vermilion palace walls, golden glazed tiles and pure white marble terraces are laid out in clear layers, accurately recreating the magnificent layout of the gate, which curves inward on three sides with five lofty towers soaring overhead. As the ceremonial gateway of the Forbidden City, it hosted imperial edict proclamations and prisoner-of-war presentation rituals in ancient times, standing as the foremost symbol of imperial authority. Delicate engraved lines reproduce minute details including bracket sets, upturned eaves and parapets, revealing the overwhelming grandeur of Ming imperial architecture through layered light and shadow.
The attached vignette displays a hollow-carved white jade dragon-and-phoenix disc, a top-tier jade carving from the imperial workshops of the Qing Dynasty. Crafted from smooth, translucent jade, it bears interwoven hollow carvings of dragons and phoenixes—majestic dragons paired with graceful phoenixes, symbolizing the auspicious union of dragon and phoenix. It represents the pinnacle of ancient jade carving craftsmanship. The solemn palace gate on the left and elegant jade disc on the right complement each other, balancing majesty and refinement. From the very first stamp, it illustrates the dual essence of the Palace Museum: imperial ritual system and refined imperial collections.
Hall of Supreme Harmony · Shang and Zhou Bronze Cauldron
The second stamp centers on the Hall of Supreme Harmony, the core building of the Palace Museum, commonly known as the Golden Throne Hall. It ranks as the highest-grade hall within the entire Forbidden City, hosting all state-level grand ceremonies during the Ming and Qing dynasties, including enthronements, imperial birthday celebrations and Winter Solstice rituals. The stamp fully reproduces the hall’s full view, with its double-eaved hip roof and triple-layered marble Sumeru base distinctly rendered. Spacious and solemn, every roof ridge mythical beast and window lattice pattern is faithfully replicated from the original artifact, embodying the supreme grandeur of the "Son of Heaven’s residence". It stands as the epitome of ancient Chinese palatial architecture.
Its matching vignette features a heavy bronze ritual vessel from the Shang and Zhou dynasties. Bronze artifacts are the foundational treasures of Chinese civilization. This rectangular cauldron bears primitive, imposing ornamentation with powerful carvings of taotie masks and thunder cloud patterns, embodying the ritual and music civilization of China dating back three thousand years. The Golden Throne Hall represents the peak of feudal imperial power, while the bronze cauldron embodies the origin of ancient ritual culture. Ancient and modern civilizations converge on this tiny stamp surface, allowing viewers to grasp the lineage of Chinese cultural inheritance at a glance.
Corner Tower · Handed-Down Ancient Landscape Painting
The third stamp features the most iconic scenic landmark of the Forbidden City—the Corner Tower. Unlike the imposing grandeur of the Hall of Supreme Harmony, the Corner Tower exudes delicate agility. Its intricate wooden framework, constructed with nine beams, eighteen columns and seventy-two roof ridges, is a masterstroke of ingenious craftsmanship. Red walls, golden tiles and multi-layered upturned eaves reflect in the moat, serving as a microcosm of classical Chinese garden architectural aesthetics. The designer muted heavy solemnity and adopted soft tones to depict the tower’s exquisite, graceful silhouette, making this the most finely detailed depiction of the Corner Tower among all Palace Museum-themed stamp sets.
The supplementary vignette showcases a time-honored ancient landscape painting from the museum’s collection, rendered in elegant brushwork with layered distant mountains and near waters, representing the zenith of traditional Chinese painting art. Palaces are three-dimensional architectural scrolls, while ancient paintings are two-dimensional landscapes of palaces—one tangible, one imaginary. Together they perfectly interpret the unique oriental aesthetic conception cherished by the Chinese people.
Gate of Heavenly Purity · Imperial Blue-and-White Porcelain Vase
The fourth stamp portrays the Gate of Heavenly Purity, the dividing line between the Outer Court and Inner Chambers, as well as the venue where Qing emperors held outdoor audience hearings to handle state affairs. Countless national policies and administrative decisions were formulated here, marking a pivotal node in the political history of the Palace Museum. The composition is concise and stately, with red gate panels studded with golden nails and a single-eaved gable hip roof conveying restrained solemnity, befitting a space for the emperor’s daily governance.
Its attached vignette presents imperial blue-and-white porcelain of the Ming and Qing dynasties, featuring mild, elegant blue-and-white glaze and elaborate interlocking floral patterns. Porcelain served as a core medium for ancient Chinese cultural exchange with the world, and the imperial porcelain housed in the Palace Museum sets the global benchmark for ceramic art. The gate for imperial governance paired with imperial porcelain perfectly ties together two dimensions: royal statecraft and imperial craft art, bringing the entire stamp set to a satisfying conclusion.
When viewed as a complete series, the four stamps guide viewers on a full journey through the core areas of the Forbidden City’s Outer Court and Inner Chambers, starting from the main gate to the golden throne hall, then to delicate towers and inner palaces. Covering all four major categories of national treasures—jade, bronze, painting and porcelain—the set offers a condensed, in-depth tour of the Palace Museum. Without traveling afar, one may behold the boundless splendor of the Forbidden City within tiny stamp surfaces.
As a World Cultural Heritage site and China’s top cultural museum IP, the Palace Museum embodies the shared cultural identity of all Chinese people. Officially issued, this stamp set condenses the museum’s architecture and four major categories of relics, functioning both as architectural science material and relic appreciation reference. Keeping a set at home allows quiet appreciation to deepen intuitive understanding of the Forbidden City’s layout and ancient craft aesthetics. It also serves as an excellent introductory teaching tool for children to learn traditional culture. These miniature stamps carry profound cultural heritage, endowing them with irreplaceable cultural significance.
