先以淡雅幽翠的平等青料在胎体勾勒龙凤全部纹样轮廓,高温烧制青花白瓷胎;

再填入莹润鲜亮的绿彩为主色调,辅以少许红、黄、赭彩点缀纹饰细节,二次低温烘烧固色;

釉面莹润细腻,泛一层温润的油脂光泽,白釉温润似凝脂,无刺眼浮光,是成化官窑独有的娇润釉质质感。

龙纹:身形纤巧婉转,为成化朝标志性细身行龙,龙鳞细密规整,龙须飘逸,体态温婉柔美,摒弃永宣龙纹的雄浑霸气,尽显成化雅致婉约之风;通体施以苍翠绿彩,色泽鲜活素雅,层次饱满;

This doucai horseshoe-shaped zun vase decorated with green dragon and phoenix patterns derives its name from its horseshoe-like overall contour, serving as a classic display porcelain form of the Chenghua reign during the Ming Dynasty. Boasting smooth and full outlines throughout the vessel, it features a contracted mouth, short constricted neck, plump shoulders, bulging abdomen, a gradually tapering lower belly, and a neatly splayed ring foot. Sturdy and dignified in entirety, it boasts exquisitely calibrated proportions. The porcelain wall features uniform thickness; the piece feels mild, substantial and weighty when held. The base bears the six-character regular script inscription Da Ming Chenghua Nian Zhi (Made in the Chenghua Period of the Great Ming Dynasty). Elegant and restrained in calligraphy, the inscription embodies the quintessential stylistic characteristics of official imperial porcelain marks of the Chenghua era.

Chenghua doucai ranks among the supreme treasures of Chinese porcelain, pioneering a composite polychrome painting technique: underglaze blue outlines paired with overglaze enamel fills.

First, the full dragon and phoenix motifs are outlined on the porcelain body using subtle, serene cobalt blue pigment known as equal blue. The ware is then fired at high temperature to form a blue-and-white porcelain base.

Next, lustrous and vivid green enamel is applied as the primary tone, accented sparingly with red, yellow and ochre hues to embellish intricate decorative details, followed by a second low-temperature firing to fix the colors permanently.

The glaze surface is sleek and delicate, covered with a gentle fatty luster. The white glaze is smooth and creamy like condensed fat, devoid of harsh glaring sheen — a tender, moist glaze texture exclusive to Chenghua imperial official porcelain.

Dragon Pattern: The dragon is slender and sinuous, representing the iconic slim walking dragon motif distinctive to the Chenghua period. Its scales are fine and orderly, whiskers flowing gracefully, and its posture mild and refined. Unlike the bold, domineering dragons of the Yongle and Xuande reigns, it fully manifests the delicate, graceful aesthetic favored in the Chenghua era. Rendered entirely in deep emerald green, the color tone is fresh and understated with rich tonal depth.

Phoenix Pattern: The celestial phoenix spreads its wings wide with layered, flowing tail plumes, forming a paired motif with the dragon. The dragon and phoenix coil and interweave amid auspicious cloud scrolls. The phoenix feathers painted in varying shades of green show distinct layers, lively and refined.

The paired dragon and phoenix motif has long been termed Dragon and Phoenix Bringing Prosperity in ancient China. Since antiquity, it symbolizes imperial auspiciousness, harmonious marital union, national stability and peace. Executed predominantly in green enamel lends it unique charm: green embodies vitality and perpetual renewal, signifying enduring dynastic foundation, prolonged fortune and longevity, and harmonious family life.

Imperial official porcelain from the Chenghua reign survives in extremely limited quantities. Among polychrome porcelains of the Ming and Qing dynasties, doucai occupies the pinnacle of the collecting hierarchy, with surviving specimens exceedingly rare.
