The 10 Cash copper coin of Guangxu Yuanbao minted in Hubei Province during the Qing Dynasty is an indispensable classic entry-level collectible for novice coin enthusiasts, as well as a core physical artifact for researching late Qing currency reforms and the development of Hubei’s modern industry.

Before the 26th year of the Guangxu reign (1900), square-hole cast cash dominated domestic circulation. After China opened its doors to the outside world, cross-regional commerce surged, causing massive silver outflow. Traditional square-hole coins suffered from low casting efficiency and insufficient supply, triggering a severe copper cash shortage and drastic price fluctuations across markets. To ease the currency circulation crisis, the Viceroy of Liangguang took the lead in introducing Western machinery to produce machine-struck copper coins. These new standardized copper tokens, formed by stamping with uniform patterns and denominations, were soon adopted by provinces nationwide, and Hubei was among the first to establish an official mint.

In the 28th year of the Guangxu reign, Zhang Zhidong, Viceroy of Huguang, founded the Hubei Silver Mint in Wuchang (later renamed the Hubei Copper Mint). Drawing on the complete modern industrial infrastructure of the Hanyang Iron Works, the mint imported a full set of imported stamping equipment and commenced mass production of the Guangxu Yuanbao series copper coins minted in Hubei. Among all denominations, the 10 Cash version boasted the largest mintage and widest circulation. At that time, Wuhan, known as the thoroughfare to nine provinces, served as the commercial heart of Central China, with merchants gathering at Hankou Wharf for the transshipment of goods from north to south. Thanks to its convenient denomination conversion and durable texture, the 10 Cash copper coin spread across the entirety of Hubei, circulating as far as neighboring Hunan, Henan, Jiangxi, Sichuan and other provinces, and became the primary small-denomination currency in Central China in the late Qing Dynasty.

The creation of the Guangxu Yuanbao 10 Cash copper coin marked the landmark shift from China’s ancient hand-cast coinage to modern machine-struck currency. For thousands of years prior, coins were manufactured via sand casting, resulting in rough surfaces and inconsistent dimensions. In contrast, the Hubei Mint adopted Western steel die stamping technology, yielding sharp, crisp characters and dragon patterns alongside unified size and weight standards. This standardized production model revolutionized China’s millennia-long coinage history, and this copper coin stands as a well-preserved physical relic of that industrial transformation.

This specimen is a standard 10 Cash copper coin of Hubei-minted Guangxu Yuanbao. Measured dimensions: 28 mm in diameter, 6.6 grams in weight. The coin remains intact with no cracks, perforations or severe dents. Over more than a century of circulation, it has developed a rich, natural aged patina, granting it solid foundational collectible quality.

Obverse (Character Side): Calligraphic Aesthetics of Official Hubei Mintage

Four large regular script characters “Guang Xu Yuan Bao” are inscribed vertically at the coin’s center, penned by official court calligraphers of the Qing Dynasty. The bold, well-balanced brushstrokes blend the formality of regular script with the fluidity of semi-cursive script, making this coin a representative calligraphic model among late Qing machine-struck copper coins. The outer rim bears the provincial inscription “Minted in Hubei Province” and denomination “Ten Cash”, flanked by Manchu characters on both sides. The coexistence of Manchu and Chinese script is a defining feature of Qing coinage, reflecting the political backdrop of joint Manchu-Han governance in that era. A central dot serves as an alignment marker for stamping, and the fine, uniform denticles along the outer edge offer direct evidence of original factory steel die production.

The coin is cast from an official standard copper-red alloy. More than a century of circulation has built layered dark brown-black natural patina that outlines, rather than obscures, the inscribed characters. Free from rigid artificial patina discoloration, it carries authentic circulated surface toning — a key benchmark for authenticating antique copper coins and evaluating their collectible value.

Reverse (Dragon Side): Craftsmanship and Symbolism of Imperial Qing Dragon Motifs

The coin’s reverse features the official standard coiled dragon design of the Qing court, the most distinctive hallmark of Hubei 10 Cash copper coins. A majestic dragon coils across the coin’s center, with raised head, flowing whiskers, meticulously layered scales and powerful claws, surrounded by cloud scroll motifs. All intricate lines are formed in a single stamping pass using high-precision steel dies, condensing the imperial aesthetic of traditional royal dragon iconography onto a tiny coin face.

In the Qing Dynasty, dragon patterns symbolized imperial authority and national fortune. Embossed on circulating currency, they proclaimed the legitimacy of the imperial court and the stability of the realm. The Hubei Guangxu Yuanbao 10 Cash copper coin encompasses dozens of sub-varieties including Small Pearl Dragon, Large Water Dragon, and Pearl Ring Dragon, each corresponding to dies produced in different years. Disparities in surviving quantities of each variant directly drive collectible premiums. This specimen retains complete, crisp dragon detailing with well-preserved scales and cloud scrolls; its standard, orthodox die type lends it significant research value for sub-variety classification.

The outer rim of the reverse bears the English inscriptions “HU-PEH PROVINCE” and “TEN CASH”, a stylistic hallmark of the late Qing opening-up era. After China was forced to open its borders, foreign trade flourished, and English markings facilitated transactions with overseas merchants. This single copper coin integrating Manchu, Chinese and English script stands as an intuitive miniature of Sino-Western economic integration and national opening, holding irreplaceable historical research value.

This copper coin stands as a tangible relic of the Westernization Movement led by Zhang Zhidong in the late Qing Dynasty. During his tenure as Governor of Hubei and Hunan Provinces, Zhang founded the Hanyang Iron Works, Hanyang Arsenal and Hubei Mint, establishing a complete modern industrial system in Hubei. The Hubei Copper Mint constituted a vital component of his Westernization industrial undertakings. This tiny copper token interweaves multiple historical threads of late Qing industry, finance, trade and foreign diplomacy, making it an exceptional physical exhibit for history classrooms at primary and secondary schools, cultural and revolutionary history exhibition halls, as well as private scholarly studies. Compared with bulky collectibles such as ancient books and porcelain wares, copper coins are compact for storage and display, yet they offer an intuitive window into the currency reform and Westernization Movement of the late Qing era, boasting irreplaceable value for historical popularization.

It integrates China’s millennium-old dragon-themed traditional culture with modern Western mechanical stamping craftsmanship, emerging as an iconic fusion of Eastern and Western arts. Its production procedures—hand-carved steel dies, high-pressure stamping and copper alloy smelting—blend traditional Oriental decorative aesthetics with Western industrial manufacturing technology. This distinctive dual craft identity differentiates machine-struck coins from hand-cast square-hole cash of ancient times, forming an independent collecting category of its own. Today, the traditional craft of hand-carving coin dies is on the verge of extinction. Surviving official-minted copper coins from the Qing Dynasty are dwindling year by year, and well-preserved circulated specimens are growing increasingly scarce in the market.

Within the antique coin collecting circle, dragon-patterned copper coins of the late Qing Dynasty rank among the most widely collected entry-level artifacts, enjoying an extensive collector base and strong market liquidity. As coinage produced in Hubei, the central hub of central China, the Guangxu Yuanbao 10 Cash boasts a moderate surviving quantity. It neither carries the prohibitive price tag of ultra-rare single specimens that often fetch hundreds of thousands, nor suffers from stagnant appreciation seen in over-minted provincial copper coins, rendering it a stable long-term collectible asset.

Data from antique markets and formal coin auctions in recent years indicates that intact Hubei 10 Cash coins coated with natural aged patina have seen steady annual price appreciation. Rarer sub-varieties and uncirculated mint-state pieces command substantially higher premiums. As antique coin culture gains wider popularity, a growing number of young collectors are entering the market, driving sustained demand for late Qing silver and copper coins. Long-term holdings deliver reliable value preservation and appreciation potential.

Furthermore, this artifact suits a diverse range of scenarios: Numismatists can integrate it into thematic collections to assemble complete sets of Hubei copper coins categorized by minting year and variety; enterprises may display it in cultural exhibition halls or present it as high-end cultural business gifts; history enthusiasts can showcase it at home alongside historical volumes to build a dedicated display nook. It also serves as a refined cultural gift for elders and fellow antique collectors, embodying centuries of profound historical heritage with timeless, distinguished appeal.
