Su Zhigang: Member of the Communist Party of China, National First-Class Artist and National First-Class Calligrapher. He studied under Qi Lixia, the direct granddaughter of Qi Baishi and an authentic inheritor of the Qi School, and also learned traditional flower-and-bird and landscape painting from renowned masters including Wu Liudong and Huo Chunyang. He is the fourth-generation orthodox inheritor of the Qi School’s shrimp painting technique. He masters all five major calligraphic scripts: regular, running, cursive, clerical and seal scripts, with particular proficiency in running-cursive script. His brushwork is smooth and powerful, and his compositions are grand and unrestrained, ideal for auspicious business inscriptions and large hanging calligraphy for halls. His running-cursive works such as Soaring Grand Enterprise and Great Virtue Bears All Things are widely available on the market. This piece Soaring Grand Enterprise showcases his mastery of the five scripts, especially running-cursive. Its brush momentum flows freely and unrestrainedly, with characters steady and spacious without deliberate over-polishing, balancing elegance and bold heroism. As the fourth-generation orthodox inheritor of the Qi School, Su Zhigang carries forward the distinctive ink techniques of shrimp painting with clear artistic lineage, possessing solid expertise in both traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy. He is a powerful young and middle-aged painter and calligrapher of the contemporary era.
